Anti Freeze ?? 900 96

Hi all,

I haven't had any trouble with my 96' 964 in 4 months. I guess I just broke some type of record (hehe). Well I think my car is burning Anti-Freeze. Has anyone had this problem? A few months ago the Anti-freeze low light came on, and now its on again. I try to keep a 50/50 ballance of Genuine Volvo Anti-freeze and water. Do Volvos burn Anti-Freeze. Thanks for the Replies.

Brandon

Re: Anti Freeze ?? 900 96

Hey Brandon:

I had the same problem with low coolant level. Saw a message on Steve Ringlee's FAQ about it. Seems that the grey coolant recovery bottle cap is defective. Replaced mine with a green one and haven't had a problem with it since. I bought mine at the volvo dealer because I couldn't find it elsewhere around here, but I understand Stant makes it and you can get it at auto parts stores that stock Stant products. Check out the FAQ at:

Hope this is helpful.

Re: Anti Freeze ?? 900 96

Mike,

I do have the Grey one. Im going to check with Volvo about that on monday. Do you remember how much that cost? Hope its not over $20. I thought it was kind of wierd for it to all of a sudden start now. Why not a few year back when I was really pushing the car? Oh well.

Thanks for the help,

Brandon

It cost right at $20. Too much! Try a local auto parts store to see if they have the Stant brand one.

I just did mine last fall, and it is a 96, and I probably went months just topping it off when the low coolant light came on.

Re: Anti Freeze ?? 900 96

Mike,

We have some cheezy Auto Parts stores around here. I went to get some non-volvo rotors, front and rear. The rear one's came at about $175 a piece. And the Fronts came out to $125 a piece. I went to Volvo where I found the rears for $97 a piece and the fronts for $125. I will look at the auto parts store for this piece. Well all in all I feel I came out ahead, Usually the average problem costs around $350 so 20 is not that bad.

Re: Anti Freeze ?? 900 96

Well, I have the same problem around here. I do have an independent garage that will order me parts and give me a 20% "discount" but they still ain't cheap. And the $20 fix is pretty good.

Sorry that you have had bad luck with your 960. So far mine has been OK, although I do sometimes wish I had gotten the 940 as there seems to be less to worry about....

Re: Anti Freeze ?? 900 96

Mike,

I would have sold this car a long time ago but, the two reasons I have kept it are saftey and performance. This car bears the Volvo saftey factor and that I feel is a Priority. Espically after someone wrecked my S80 T-6 I decided that all my cars were going to be Volvo (Im sure you don't want to hear another Volvo Saftey story so I'll spare you).

The second reason I keep it is the I-6 Engine performes very well not as well as the T-6. Those 8 cyl camaro's never knew what type of car flew right by them but it was my S80 (hehe). The 960 is not like the T-6 but it give those Honda guys something to try to keep up with. I love the though of Rear Wheel drive, The S80 had horrible torque steer, I didn't like the steering it was way too loose. Ofcourse I didn't warp the rotors in the S80 like I do in the 960.

Re: Anti Freeze ?? 900 96

Brandon,

No car should "Burn Antifreeze". If it does, you should notice three things:

1. Your car will run like shit.

2. You will have a pervasive white smoke cloud following you.

3. Your wallet, (well, maybe not YOURS), will feel a helluva lot lighter.

This usually means you have blown your head, or head gasket.

MUCH more likely.... you have a leak, which if not attended to will place you in the position described above.

Hey! If your weekend travels take you through the valley, N. Hwd./ Van Nuys, let me know. If I'm home, you may swing by and I'll check it out for you.

Re: Anti Freeze ?? 900 96

General Patton,

I am actualy planning on driving up to L.A. this Wednesday or Thursday depending on when my finals finish. I have noticed that my car struggles at around 6200 RPM's. It doesn't have the clean sound anymore. I did see in Steve Ringles FAQ abut the coolant loss and my Cap is Grey. Monday Im going to go to Volvo, (I'm on first name basis there with everyone, even the cashier). Thanks for the help.

Brandon
