fuel delivery issues/tank problems? 200 83

Hey guys,

need some help.242 glt and motor is sound, tank is exactly half full according to guage. In reality about 3/4 empty, car stutters after left hand turn.I suspect it gets worse the lower the tank gets.

I replaced the in tank pump this wknd(pain in the arse).Same problem with the stutter.Whats next? The in tank pump was not working prior to the replace, and the sock was barely hanging on.Is there a prob with the holes in the resevoir in the tank.Remember the cae was sitting for two years with the gas tank door open and the tank cap off.

Thanks for the help.

RR

Re: fuel delivery issues/tank problems? 200 83

/// What was the condition of the tank when you were working in it? If there was rust the system is clogged all the way to the filter. That tank does not have a reserve compartment. There is a cup spot welded to the tank bottom to hold fuel around the pump as it runs low.

The fuel gauge is not linear and half a tank may not be accurately a half tank. You have about 2.5 gallons when the needle gets to the red reserve mark.

A repair of the tank can be done at radiator shops that offer the service. They coat the inside with a polyester sealer. It will serve no purpose if the tank is heavily pitted and has pin holes. Replace the whole tank.

If you do that buy a slightly longer bolt for the fitting on the fuel input tube. The old one doesn't want to reach after you spread the "V" channel clamp removing it. It reassembles much easier if you have about 1/2 inch extra bolt and thread.

Did you check the wires? Can you hear the the pump working now? When you change the pump was the hose from pump to the tube still ok? When I replace the pump on my 242 I realized that the hose have a crack and when the tank is almost empty the car "stutters"

Hope this help
