Question,Don Foster/solder guru 200 83

Good morning Don and Bricksters,

Among my latest projects on my recently recomissioned 242glt is fuel delivery issues.Specifically in-tank and main fuel pumps.Replaced in tank pump and noisy main persists as well as some hesitation on less than half tank.

Anyway, while replacing several times, long story, the main fuel pump I was changing out the valve in the pump which required bending the +/- prongs and ended up breaking the prongs off.Can I resolder these prongs.I realize the danger of working with heat around gas.But the pump is good and I hate to trash it

Thanks

RR

Re: Question,Don Foster/solder guru 200 80

I have a 1980 that had the noisy fuel pump.

I believe that the mechanic said that perhaps the original fuel pump had a little bit more capacity (volume) than the newer replacement.

As a result, he found somewhere that in order to get rid of the noise, you had to use a fuel pump replacement from a later year (mid or late 80s) which had more capacity.

He also said that he had to replace the wire to the fuel pump probably because it was working so hard (making the noise).

I hate to be the king of rigging it, but just get a few short peices of wire and the opposite conector that is on the harmess. Soder the short pieces to the stubs, soder the proper conector on the other end, a little shrink wrap and your all good.

/// Solder alone will probably not hold, but if you drill length wise through the prong and into the broken stud you might be able to put a fine screw into the center hole to brace the solder joint. Anything that would brace the solder joint would do even breaking off the drill bit in place.

Try model airplane and car stores for the small parts and drill bits.

Oh, and one more thing... 200 83

Don't forget to replace the 2" 10-cent hose.

If you follow Mr. WBainlookalike's good advice -- let it dry out first and do it away from the open tank -- you have nothing to lose. Your only option is to buy a new or used replacement. If your soldering attempts fail, you must buy one anyway.

Re: Question,Don Foster/solder guru 200 83

Verify that your intank pump is running by listening to the tank fill opening while the car is running. Have someone pull the in tank pump fuse while you listen. If you dont hear the pump turn off it, isn't running, and you need to start trouble shooting.

Heat and dasoline do not mix well. Remove the pump and let it air dry. then resolder. Have a fire extinguisher ready.
