Clutch cable adjustment? Which way?? 200 '86

Hello-

Have an '86 245. The clutch is getting harder to engage. I have to let farther up off of the clutch for it to catch now. I don't think that the clutch is bad. It's not slipping. Just takes longer for it to catch. I saw in Bentley that I can adjust the clutch cable for this problem.

I think I can access the adjustment bracket by driving it up on ramps. Which way to I adjust the nut? Do I loosen it or tighten it so that it engages sooner? Bentley makes it seem pretty easy. Just loosen or tighten the adjustment nut. Thanks abunch!

    Ryan -

As I recall, you should make the cable a little longer, maybe a half-turn at a time. A little goes a long way.

How quickly has the problem come on? Clutch cables might stretch a little before they snap. Also, I had one experience in which the clutch got harder to disengage, and I adjusted the cable but eventually there wasn't any adjustment left. Found out that the lever between the cable and the other side, the one that does all the work, was bending more and more. Suggest that you purchase a new cable ASAP. With tools and a ramp you can replace the cable pretty easily wherever.

Does your car have a tach? It's a lot easier to drive with no clutch if you have one. I was lucky when my cable snapped because somewhere in my distant past I was told about matching gear speed and engine speed making shifting with no clutch possible. T'was a little tricky handling stop lights, however.

    Good Luck,

    Bob
