ATF in radiator/ flushing 200 1990

I noticed ATF in the overflow of the radiator( of my 1990 240 dl auto)

I'm replacing the radiator, I wanted to know what type of ATF to use.

My Bentley book said Dextrol II and the parts shop said Dextrol III(castrol). What is the difference?

I would like to flush the old water/fluid out as opposed to dismantling the transmission. I would like to avoid destroying the transmission.

Any advise or warning wuld help.

phil

Dexron III replaced Dexron II and is backwardly compatible.

You don't have to use Castrol--any good brand name ATF will be fine.

If you are off the road and have some time, pull a sample of the ATF and have a lab check it for antifreeze--then you'll know if there has been 2 way mixing.

As mentioned in other reply, could take 16 quarts or so to really be sure.

I'd use a non-synthetic to do this. Then I'd run it for about 1000 miles and pull an oil sample to see if there is any antifreeze in the ATF. If everything is OK, I'd flush again with a synthetic ATF.

    Phil -

You can probably flush the trans if you caught the problem quick enough. It might take 16 quarts flushed through. There's a post on the procedure using the car itself, removing one of the lines at the rad and adding fluid thru the level check tube. Look for the other post, my info is incomplete.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

If you have atf in the coolant, the small heat exchanger inside the radiator is broken and the two fluids are mixing. This is not good for the trans. Either get a new radiator, a Nissens is good, or an external trans cooler. Don't wait.
