About to change out the water pumpm on my B21Fti, doesn't look like a complicated job. Anything in there that may bite me in the ass?

all i can say is...dont buy cheap replacement or rebuilt..spring for the extra buck for either a volvo or NAPA new water pump...i know AUTO ZONE, DISCOUNT, ADVANCED, PEP BOYS...all have lifetime warrenties....but do you really wana do this job again, if the made in china $18.00 pump dont hold up more then 6 months to a year?

Because I was in a pinch for time, I bought and installed an Auto Zone pump (Ampora brand?) for $35.

Can't say I am happy with it. It installed fine and looked identical to the original I took off (only due to a failed pump to cylinder head seal)

But now the temp guage sits on the tiny white dot at the 9 o'clock position. The car had a Nissens 3-row radiator.

I seem to remember the twmp guage resting *below* the white dot, at about 8 o'clock when the Volvo water pump was still in there.

Amen. Don't forget about I.P.D. out there in Portland, OR. We've had very good success with their products over the years and seven Volvo's. The Bently manual for Volvo repair is a plus. The water pipe/O ring alignment is sort of a coordinated effort in conjunction with the wood support block to hold everything in alignment. All this can be mastered, saving you big bucks at the dealer.

    Mike -

My 1983 and 1984 are not turbo, so there may be some differences. There are just a few gotcha's. When removing the bolts and studs from the crank pulley, DO NOT round off any nuts. They seem to be a softer material and I rounded off a few. 2) On re-assembly, the O-ring seals on the top side of the water pump require that the pump be installed but only finger tight. Then use something to force the pump upward with one hand and tighten the bolts with the other. I never pulled the radiator for this job, some have said doing so makes it lots easier.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

PS I have had no cooling system coolant-related problems since I started using a mixture of 50/50 antifreeze and steam distilled water.
