Blue Lead to Ignition Coil Positive Terminal Always Correct?? 700 87

Hello

We were trying to help a friend get his 87 740 going. When we first arrived we noticed the blue lead was hooked up to the negative terminal on his coil. It seemed to me that that was wrong. All the cars I seen at the salvage yard are wired the opposite. Eventually we had to leave so we never got to see the car running. Whats your thoughts. Also if we want to see if there is power to at least the coil can you hook up a test light to one of the coil posts. Instead of checking for spark with the wire set. Thanx Bill

Blue is plus. It should have 12 volts which you would see with a test light. The other lead which is minus will have 12 volts pulsing to 0 volts as you crank. You would see this with the light as well. With key on but cranking I believe you will see 12 volts at both terminals.

    Got spark, got fuel?

      Hey David

      Thanx for responding.

What do you think would happen if someone changed their coil and in so doing inadvertently switched the leads. Poor run, No run, damage??

Also do you believe checking for coil spark or plug spark by grounding against the engine is a bad idea.

      Thanx Bill

Never reversed these leads do don't know. I do not think there would be any permanent damage. Check for spark with an old plug connected to a lead and hold against ground.
