changing injectors 200 1984

My mechanic tells me I need to change my injectors as part of the solution for a rough running engine (turbo). Any hints for dealing with the fuel lines, as I don't want to damage them? Does this change sound like good advice? They may even be the originals; I'm certain they have the last 70,000 miles on them, and have been cleaned.

Thanks,

Bill Harkins

Re: changing injectors 200 1984

I second the General and I will also share with you my recent experience. My 760 turbo (1986) ran rough and when I pulled the spark plugs, even new ones put in a few day before, they were sooty with the threads covered with what looked like dirty oit or burnt sugar with a strong smell of gas. Mileage was poor. It looked like the car was running very rich. Read many times 700/900 FAQ on theis website. I changed the engine wiring harness and that improved but did not entirely fix things. I checked injectors, moved them around and the "burnt sugar" moved with injectors. This made me think I had leaking injectors. I trired to clean them without success so I changed them. Big improvement. Now spark plugs came out with only a trace of black around the rim and pristine electrodes. Cheched coolant temperature sensor and it came up bad. So I changed it. Of course, I have foled around also with AMM and oxygen sensor. I have also gone over all wiring and vacuum hoses. Now the car runs like new. If you post symptoms and diagnosis perhaps I can help you a bit more. If you have more time than money, the General call tel you how to make an engine wire harness to put Volvo to shame. Otherwise, I can tell you where to buy for $250 and how to put in the car yourself in less than one hour. If it comes to that, I think I can tell you where to have your injectors cleaned ($25 each) or buy new ones ($65 each). I can also help you with installation tips I learned the hard way. Ditto for coolant temperature sensor ($17).

Re: changing injectors 200 1984

Just wondering....

How many injectors are there in an engine, like a 240. Some one told me to clean the injectors, cause my mileage is poor.

thanks

Re: And one more thing... 200 1984

I just noticed you have an '84.

That year was just about the worst of the worst for harness rot. I'd be looking at the wiring very carefully.

Want proof? I just spent 9 hours on saturday re-wiring my EFI harness on a late 960. Some things never change.

Re: Throwing parts at a problem... 200 1984

...and hoping it goes away....

Thats what it sounds like to me.

I would ask for a real diagnosis. doing it any other way can get awfully expensive.
