high idle 700 1985

I've got a 1985 740 Non turbo.

I cn't get the damn idle below about 950-1100rpm. I changed the idle air control, disassembled and cleand throttle body, adjusted throttle position switch, checked linkage, checked for vacumm leaks under the hood. I think I've done all normal things that are mentioned in FAQ. But it still won't stay below the above figures. This may be related, my control valve for hot water between engine and heater core seems to vacumm controled and it doesnt adjust, neither do my vent controls work. I looked and listened but could not find a leak or break under dash.

Anyone with any ideas?

Is the throttle linkage out of adjustment and holding the throttle vlave open just a little?

      Re: high idle 700 1985

When I push down on throttle linkage (toward the set screw adjuster) the rpm drops a little, maybe 50-100 rpm by ear, but returns to higher rpm when pressure is released. The throttle is not resting on the stop though. I've cleaned the throttle bottle thoroughly, but maybe the butterfly valve is stuck on something? I'll have to check in the morning.

I did have a problem with the previous IAC motor. The car was running it's usual high rpm (1100) and suddenly would start heading toward 1500-1700!

A few blips on throttle would bring it down for a while. Then off to the races again, this happened all day about two weeks ago btw.

I stopped and tapped on the IAC with small wrench and it brought it down all the way to the 750 figure for the first time ever. (I've had car running since AUG 2001). I thought that if changed the IAC I'd have this thing licked. But after replacing with used IAC it just returned to the "normal" idle I had.

Otherwise car seems to run normal.

I'm almost tempted to take it to a real mechanic!!!

As I posted before, adjust the throttle linkage so it does not hold the butterfly valve open. Your response confirms my suspicions. Remove the adjustable linkage from the lever arm on the butterfly valve, and adjust it's length so it does not hold the butterfly valve open at all.

    Re: high idle 700 1985

Pinch shut the hose to the IAC, does the idle rpm come down?

-If it does it could be IAC or ECU problem

Disconnect the throttle linkage rod (with IAC hose pinched), does the idle come down?

-If it does your cables or linkage need adjustment

-If is does not adjust you throttle blade stop screw

Get back to us, your problem is very fixable
