Radio Supression Relay Function 700 1990

I'm not having any problem with it, just a nagging curiosity. What EXACTLY does the RSR feed power to. My understanding is that it's purpose is to supply power, some way or another, to operate the injectors, thus not having that cyclical current running through wires near the radio. Yet the ECU is located in the cabin, kind of near the radio.....

But I've also been lead to believe that the RSR somehow supplies power to the ignition system, and without this power, the fuel pump will not operate, as a means of avoiding flooding. In other words, if your car won't start, but you can hear the pump running, then the RSR must be OK.

Also, on the Regina system, do all injectors function simultaneously?

That's about it for now. Please someone enlighten me so I can sleep tonight.

Re: Radio Supression Relay Function 700 1990

"...understanding is that it's purpose is to supply power, some way or another, to operate the injectors, thus not having that cyclical current running through wires near the radio..."

I believe that's exactly right. The ecu effectively grounds the injectors, but the ground path is back to the block.

"...somehow supplies power to the ignition system, and without this power, the fuel pump will not operate..."

No and yes.

The relay does NOT control the power to the ignition system. However, the FI ecu senses the ignition PRIMARY (that's the 12 volt stuff) and detects pulses. If no pulses, then the fuel pump relay drops out after ~1 second.

"...if your car won't start, but you can hear the pump running, then the RSR must be OK..."

Not necessarily. The fuel pump current is not controlled by the radio suppression relay -- it switches power to the four injectors ONLY. If you hear the pump running it means the fuel pump relay's OK and that the ecu detects pulses at the ignition primary. If, for example, the coil wire were shorted to ground you'd have no spark to the plugs but the injection system would be dutifully flooding the cylinders.....

Your pump could run fine but the suppression relay could simply shut off the injectors, starving the engine. Happened to wife's car two weeks after resoldering the fuel pump relay....

"...Regina system, do all injectors function simultaneously?"

They do on my '91 740 with Rex Regina.

Sleep tight!

I'm Shocked! Shocked I Tell You 700 1990

Your have a 740? I thought you were 240's only! I won't be able to sleep all night.

Re: I'm Shocked! Shocked I Tell You 700 1990

"...a 740? I thought you were 240's only!"

This is how we learn. We do something "out of the box" and repeat it if it works or avoid it if it doesn't work.

The 740 is "out of the box" for me, but wife likes it. It reinforces for me just how much I like my stable of 245s. Aside from the fuel pump and supression relays and a blowout, however, we've had zero disabling problems with it.

And once I hit a wild turkey, upstate NY. Three months later I was still picking feathers off the undercarriage. The grill glued back together fine.

"I won't be able to sleep all night."

Well, sleep on this: I drove daughter's VW Golf today. It needs a CIS motor, shifter bushings, and a blower motor resistor.

OK, I'm About to Doze 700 1990

So, if the car doesn't start, and you DON'T hear the pump at all, suspect the fuel pump relay.

If it doesn't start, but you DO hear the pump for a moment when turning the key through the "run" position, check for spark. If no spark, suspect RPM sensor (among other things).

If it doesn't start, but you DO hear the pump for a moment when turning the key through the "run" position, and you DO have spark, suspect the Radio Supression relay (among other things).

I'm I getting warm?

Yes, maybe. Until they're properly resoldered, those damned relays are always suspect.

"...If no spark, suspect RPM sensor (among other things)..."

Sounds like the next thing on the list...

I'd say you're on a roll, Mr. Holmes.

'Course, it could be a Johnson link or somethin' on the reverse wabulator....

Re: tight sleep 700 1990

Chris --

Do you get tight before you sleep, as a requirement for sleep, or as a result of sleep?

Re: tight sleep 700 1990

In the words of W.C. Fields "have you checked the wheel base"???

Re: tight sleep 700 1990

Have I checked my wheel base? It stays the same, little chickadee.

What does W.C. Fields or wheel bases have to do with sleeping tight?
