non turbo cat on a turbo? 200 84

Brickheads,

I recently went to look at an 84Ti with a friend and one thing I noticed was that an aftermarket cat had been installed in lieu of replacing the turbo cat.

The aftermarket cat was placed in about the same location as the non-turbo version and the head pipe appeared to have been modified (or just replaced) to accept this arrangement.

My gut feeling is that this may not be a good solution but I have to ask: Is this a good alternative to the much more expensive cat the turbo requires?

As always,

It'll work. Especially good if a perf. cat is used with some larger pipes. (2.5-3.0")

A lousy job in this area shouldn't stop one from procuring an otherwise good car.

Ditto! I'm waiting for the poorly-executed exhaust (hangs too low) on my 745ti to go south so I can do it right.

I have to laugh right now- I'm thinking about the '83 242ti in the garage that's headed for the junkyard soon. I think it's got a cat off a 240 NA. Wow. Drove great from the seller's house to mine, and that's as far as that project got.
