non turbo cat on a turbo? 200 84

Brickheads,

I recently went to look at an 84Ti with a friend and one thing I noticed was that an aftermarket cat had been installed in lieu of replacing the turbo cat.

The aftermarket cat was placed in about the same location as the non-turbo version and the head pipe appeared to have been modified (or just replaced) to accept this arrangement.

My gut feeling is that this may not be a good solution but I have to ask: Is this a good alternative to the much more expensive cat the turbo requires?

As always,
