B23f: how much horsepower? 200 83-84

According to the owner's guide for my 84, 111hp. According to Haynes it's 111hp. And at volvoworld.com, 107hp and 126 lb.-ft. for the '83 and 113hp + 136 lb.-ft. for the '84.

What the....

Why would the motor gain 6 horsepower and 10 lb.-ft. in '84? They are physically identical as far as I can tell.

My '86 B230F seems faster than both...but according to various sources the power output is nearly the same right thru '93.

Who knows.....maybe this is like "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie-pop?" ;-)

    Re: B23f: how much horsepower? 200 83-84

The 107 hp figure should be for a B21, not a B23. The numbers for a B23 differ for autos and sticks. The autos had higher compression, more hp(113) and less torque, by like 3 lb.-ft., and the manuals had 111 hp and a slightly lower compression ratio, but more torque. Why? Who knows. Seems like it should be the other way to me. Hopefully my memory is correct...

The '83-'84 B23Fs are a confusing mess of setups. The early '83 cars were all 10.3:1 CR, whether auto or manual. With the Chrysler ignition, 107HP was the rated output. In late '83 to '84, Volvo started using Bosch ignitions again, boosting output to 113HP. Then they started lowering the compression on manual gearbox-equipped engines to 9.8:1, lowering output to 111HP (presumably for some emissions-related reason.)
