Cutting out/hesitation. 200 1986

Hi folks,

My car is running again now, courtesy of the new ignition amplifier, but all is not quite right. It occasionally cuts out for a split second and then catches again and continues to run ok. When this happens the rev counter drops to zero so I think it's electrical. Once he'd warmed up fully the fault semed to vanish. Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance,

Richie McMcJewell II

Re: Cutting out/hesitation. 200 1986

Thanks to all the folks who responded to my pleas for help. I cleaned all the electrical connections associated with the coil and ignition amp and gave the coil itself a good buff up (i'd let it get criminally mucky) and all seems well, but i'm still driving with my buttocks clenched until a few trouble free days have passed...

Rich.

Re: Cutting out/hesitation. 200 1986

My '86 did the same thing. I made a list of the driveability checks from the Bentley manual and started working down the list. Because the cutting out was so sporadic, I'm not sure which of the things I did fixed the problem. Anyway, I did the following: replaced the fuel filter, removed and cleaned all grounds, soldered the main relay, cleaned throttle body, cleaned battery connections, cleaned oil out of throttle position switch (don't know how the oil got there), cleaned fuses and fuse holders, looked for vacuum leaks (found none). I've been waiting for the stalling for several months and it hasn't happened so I guess one or more of the above did the job. The car needed all of this done anyway. Hope this helps.

Re: Cutting out/hesitation. 200 1986

Peel the rubber boot back in the wire to the amplifier and check whether all the connectors are properly retained by the little tang in the connector bloc. If not on of the connectors will be poking out a bit further than the others.

Regards

I believe the Tach. is driven electrically from the same source that the coil gets its signal from................................................

Loose wires?? harness? Have a hall sender?

Good luck.

Re: Cutting out/hesitation. 200 1986

I can confirm that the tach signal comes right off the coil negative terminal which is the output of thr power stage (amplifier). The input signal for the amp comes from the Igntion ECU and the timing pulses originate from the sensor in the distributor. I agree look for loose connections/wires.
