engine noise update 200 90

Greetings board,

Ive decided to " wait and see". The car really does run good, so Im just going to drive it until it tells me, with a bit more certainty, what it

needs.

For those who havent visited this before, here is the problem: Its an engine noise which Im calling a knock. This knock is never heard at cold start up, it only begins after warming up about 3-5 mins. It is heard best in idle. Never under engine load. Sometimes I can hear the noise in drive after a hard drive, but only right after start up.

Noise is in lock step cadence with the #1 spark.

Here is what ive done: removed engine drive belts, verified that the noise is unheard when drive belts are not attached to engine.

Was not able to pinpoint the noise to any accessory. Fan clutch is good. verified.

All motor mounts are good.

Does anyone know where I can get a crash course on engine noises, and how to identify them?

Thanks all!

Re: engine noise update 200 90

/// How often have you changed the oil? How did you associate the knock with the number one plug? In older cars I checked for wrist pin noise by pulling the plug wires one at the time. I suggest you check your manual before pulling plug wires. Bently warns of running the engine with a large gap in a test plug. I don't know enough about your engine to correctly advise you on how to check the cylinders one by one.

Try changing the oil and using a engine cleaner before each change. If that does not help after a few changes, I have been able to detect cam shaft knocks by using STP. When first put in the oil the STP flows through the system as a slug of thick lubricant. When it hits the site of an oiling system caused knock there will be a sudden silence then the knock will start again.

      L K,

I hooked my timing light to #1 spark plug wire and saw the light flash at the same cadence as the noise. And even though I didnt, I have a feeling that each plug would yield the same results. Ill try it tomorrow.

Also, I did pull the plug wires one at a time. No change at either cylinder. I used my stethoscope. Double and triple checked.

Im not sure what I would accomplish by using and engine cleaner? Explain?

(this is pure ignorance on my part).

The STP things sounds interesting. I was also thinking of trying a 20/50 motor oil. Presently I use castrol 10/40.

      Thank you.

That's what they make mechanic's stethoscopes (or long screwdrivers) for. Use caution around ANY moving parts (fan, belts etc.) See the JC Whitney catalog for inexpensive ones.

I have one of those. The only problem is the noise sounds like its coming from everywhere. I think the loudest spot is right atop the ps pump. But its not the ps pump.

I can also hear it at the bell housing, near the water pump, oil filter,

      freeze plug,oil sump ,drive shaft.

      Its driving me nuts.

      Thanks

Install the belts one at a time and see when the noise returns. It sounds like you have a problem with one of the accessories, or accessory mounts.

Done that. Because of the design, i can run the altenator alone,or the ac comp alone, but the ps pump has to run with the ac com, unless I went and bought another belt(its been considered).

I tried those isolations. Its weird, there is no perceptive noise unless all of the belts are attached.

      Go figure.

    Lawrence,

I have been out of town for three days so I haven't follwed your thread on the engine noise, but is it safe to assume that someone has already suggested that it might possibly be the rather common wrist pin noise associated with the B230F engine?

Re: engine noise update 200 90

        Lawrence,

I called it wrist pin noise but it is actually piston slap. It normally is most noticeable on cold startup. It may or may not be your noise but you will find many references to it if you use the site search engine and search for "piston slap". I have an 88 DL with 210,000 and an 89 with 150,000 that both have it and I don't give it a second thought (anymore; it bothered me at first and then I found out how common it it is) Putting a hood pad from a turbo 240 on them helps put it out of your mind.

          Randy,

It takes about 3-5 mins of warm up for this noise to appear, thats why Ive not concluded that its piston slap. Theres also the lack of noise with the engine belts off.

          I dont know.

Thanks for your input. Its appreciated.
