Broken manifold bolts. Any suggestions? 200 1979

I have two broken manifold bolts. I tried the "jam nut" techique, the threads stripped. I can't seem to get the drill in there to use the Easy Out. I've been soaking and tapping and heating. What else can I try? Any help is greatly appreciad. Know any good garage music?

Thanks

Richard

Highway to hell!? NOT! Ineed inspiration not a painful reminder of how much further work and how many more mishaps Roxnne (The troublesome 245)has in store for me. I'll try some Leon Redbone to keep my temper even.

I'll call Sears and a few other stores in the nearest civilized town. It'll be a 40 mile trip but better than going to a mechanic.

Thanks

Richard

Richard, the SEARS in my area only carried one meant for a large diameter stud, and required a 1/2 inch drive ratchet. Be careful, thats a long drive for the wrong tool.

Bruce,

Don't waste your time with easyout, etc. Start with a small drillbit, 1/8 or preferably smaller, and progressively work your way up, being careful not to drill too far and get into the waterjacket (in which case shoot yourself), until you are to the drill bit just a hair smaller than the stud itself. Use an old stud, a new stud , or the broken off stub to know when you have reached the correct size by holding the non buisness end of the bit up to the stud. Then use a pair of needle nose pliers to try to grab the very edge of the threads and pull the s.o.b out a like a slinky, in one solid piece. It is important to try to drill as dead center as possible. The stud will drill out far easier than you think. And any time wasted with easy outs etc. is time you could have spent drilling it out, which is what you will wind up doing anyway. You see, I just went thru this last week, wasted 2 hours screwing around, when I should have drilled it. The problem is the steel threaded into aluminum. Unless You broke it off while tightening it, then maybe it will come out with some kind of screw extractor, and pb'laster or kroil penetrating oil.

Hi Bruce

I called a few stores out near Sears. I found a KD made stud puller. I'm gonna keep tapping and soaking tonight, hopfully I won't need the puller by morning.

Richard

Middle of nowhere, convienantly located in upstate NY.

curious person:Where's that there thing made? Germany or somethin?

Me: Sweden.

Curious person: Sweeden! SweeeeDEN. Whew. Neat!

Just joking, there are a few here who know where they're made.

A right angle drill adaptor. You can also use a small bottle jack between teh head and the strut tower (whatever) to turn the engine away from you and gain about 4 inches or so of work space. I have BTDT with the turbo too, even more restricted.

That had to be fun! I used a jack when I replaced my old turbo unit. I had forgotten about it. For the turbo I also unbolted a mount but at least I won't need that much space for this project.

Thanks for the reminder!

Richard

You need a stud extractor, I found mine at the local TRAK AUTO you can also find them at PEP BOYS I don't know what stores you have in your area, but give one of them a try. It's a odd looking device that fits a ratchet and uses cam action leverage to grab onto the stud and twist it out. Others look like a standard spark plug socket, make sure it is made for a small stud, and also that it will fit over the stud and fit flush up against the block. Also spray it with PB BLASTER (WAL-MART) to loosen it up

GOOD LUCK

Good to know! I'll call around and see who can get one for me. In the mean time I'll keep soaking and heating and tapping.

Thanks

Richard
