87 Deg T'Stat vs. 92 Deg for Summer? 200 1990

After an A/C tuneup, the local shop suggested the cooler 87 degree thermostat. If the cooling system was working OK, this would keep the engine operating temp down, possibly avoiding the typical stop and go traffic temperature-creep-with-the-AC-on that occurs here in Austin. However, lowering the op temperature will reduce gas mileage too.

Which thermostat makes sense here? I am getting ready for major routine maintenance including changing the timing belt, hoses, rad flush, T'stat replacement, etc., so I will be buying some new parts. I would rather buy a three-row radiator or external ATF cooler, if extra capacity is what is needed.

Any comments or experiences?

I use the 82 degree thermostat that Yankee Trading Co. got me. If you are

in Austin I would get the 82 degree and give my engine and the wiring

a chance to last as long as possible. As long as you are making the engine

hot enough to burn off any condensation and the oil gets up to a good

lubricating temp any higher than that is excess heat. If you are going to

use a hot thermostat use the 87. Thats the regular year round thermostat

that is recommended. I don't know why your car has a 92 but I would not

use that especially living in Austin. That's a winter thermostat.
