Can I support the tranny with a jack if car is on ramps?? 200 87

Hello all-

I have an '87 245 with 172K. My shifter was bobbing so I had the motor mounts replaced. Turns out that one was broken anyway. The bobbing had subsided, but has now returned but not as bad. Obviously the tranny mount is probably bad. I'm noticing some driveline vibration now as well, so I'm going to try and fix this ASAP. All I have is drive up ramps. Can I use a floor jack to support the tranny at such an angle? I know the repair is easy, but if I can't do it on ramps, I'll have to have a mechanic do it because I'm not about to put my car on jackstands in the street. Thanks in advance!

Let me get this straight.....you're changing the transmission mount, not removing the transmission?

Driving it up on ramps in the fron is OK, but it would be a big help if you could borrow a pair of jack stands for lifting the rear. More elbow room for you.

I use my floor jack to support the transmission while lowering the supproting crossmember and changing the mount. All you're doing is preventing damaging the motor mounts.

You'll need a 14mm socket on a 6" extension to get to hat mount bolt inside the crossmember.

Support the tranny, loosen the 14mm mount bolt, take down the crossmember (not the orientation of the spacers), remove the mount.

Any special precautions? Do I need to lock the wheels on the jack somehow, or do I just do it. I would think that the weight of the tranny would keep the jack from rolling. Thanks.

Ryan, No special precautions, I would use a piece of wood between the jack and tranny. Good luck.
