auto transmisson leak 200 1986

The ATF is leaking from the front of the transmisson. Seems to be coming from torque converter to transmisson shaft area. My manuals avoid auto transmissons like the plague. Has anyone replaced the front seals Ive tried to discribe? The tranny works fine ,apart from the usual overdrive when it feels like it glitch, and I keep the fluid topped off , but oil burning off the exhaust pipe is getting hard to live with. Are these transmissons vented in some way and if so where is the vent located? Love the car, hate the oil fumes.

Re: auto transmisson leak 200 1986

Steve -

Went thru a similar mess with an 81 244DL. Leaks, drips, smoke, and no visible leaking place. It finally turned out that one of the two lines to the rad had a pinhole. It was where they go through a clamp near the bell housing. No other leak will make the kind of smoke as that one. I replaced both of the lines with dealer parts. Messy DIY.

Good Luck,

Bob

When replacing the front tranny sael do the rear engine oil seal, easy to do while tranny is out.

Re: auto transmisson leak 200 1986

If the front seal is leaking the tranny has to come off as the seal is behind the torque converter.
