Has the "Check Engine" lamp lit up? On Board Diagnostics could help. Check the ECU for trouble codes.

Seeking advice on reading Motronic 1.8 DTCs! 900 95

I have the manual but no experience, so I'm not intimately familiar with that system. Any advice appreciated.

What exactly are you looking for? I'm pretty familiar with the diagnostics on the earlier 960s...but I'm not exactly sure what you want to know.

Re: Seeking advice on reading Motronic 1.8 DTCs! 900 95

I'm trying to be of help to Rob. I haven't ever pulled the codes using the readout on the Motronic 1.8 system so I was looking for an experienced person to provide some hints and tips. Maybe you can pick up this thread?

Re: Seeking advice on reading Motronic 1.8 DTCs! 900 95

Ok, I think this is the info. you guys are looking for...

The Diagnostic terminal is a black box about 1" by 1.5" located on the driver's side strut tower. There are two boxes, you want the box located closes to the front of the car. Here is a link to the 700 FAQ that tells you how to retrieve the codes...this is for a LH 2.4 equipped car, but the process is still the same. Make sure you put the lead into socket "2" as this is the Motronic diagnostic socket. Socket "1" is for the auto tranny and "3" is for the ABS.

Once you pull the fault codes, someone else will have to tell you what the codes mean b/c I'm at work and don't have my book with me.

When we find out what the codes are, we can go from there... Chances are, though, the codes are just going to be a byproduct of whatever mechanical problem is causing the low compression in the #5 cylinder.

Re: Seeking advice on reading Motronic 1.8 DTCs! 900 95

Yep! That's the ticket. I have the codes here at work as I copied them out of the manual. If the reasons for the readings aren't obvious, I'll get my book out for the fault tree trace. Hope Rob's rings are OK.

Re: toasted head...or so we thought? 900 95

OK, So now you can use the ECM trouble codes to help identify what the problem could be. I haven't worked with your Motronic 1.8 system but my manual set covers it. I'll bring the manual into work tomorrow so I can use it as a referance. Do you know how to read the codes? I think it is covered in the FAQs?

BTW, how did you set the timing of the camshafts? Have access to the Volvo tool?

Numbers, numbers, give us the numbers. How low is number 5?
