ATF recommendations 900 94

Am about to do the tranny flush process. Need to buy ATF. In my area it seems Valvoline and its store brand equivalents are most popular. Is this a brand that you would use on your car? Should I keep looking for something better? What does the Volvo dealer use?

thanks

Re: ATF recommendations 900 94

Hi Doug,

Obviously, any flush is better than no flush. In general, synthetic is better than nonsynthetic. It is a matter of degree. New fluid depends on your wallet, longevity expectations for the car/ AT, and your driving conditions. I want to keep the car, drive many miles in Austin/ central Texas, so I use synthetic. Upt to now, I have been choosing Red Line over Amsoil, based solely on anecdotal feedback from the racing crowd: surfaces last longer with Red Line. Not my experience...just asking around. Amsoil is more available, and less expensive in general, especially if you become an acolyte and sign up for the preferred customer status. Don't waste your money on the blends. Get Mobil1, Amsoil, Red Line if you choose synth. Good luck...

Paul,

When switching to synthetic trans. fluid, I won't be able to flush all of the old non-synth. Is it OK to mix the two? CC

Valvoline is just fine to use. I used Havoline in my 960. I also added a can of Lubegard in the red can which I have only been able to find at NAPA.

Go synthetic. First choice AMSOIL ATF, next choice Mobil 1 ATF.

Re: ATF recommendations 900 94

I am about to flush mine too (94 940). I have read several methods. One which looks easiest said to simply disconnect the trans. line from the radiator and not to bother draining from the trans. plug or the line into the trans. What do you think?

Re: ATF recommendations 900 94

I'd be inclined to change the fluid in the pan before I started to pump stuff out. That way, what is pumping is all fresh and will push out the old. Probably not a big deal either way.
