Air Mass Meters-when do they usually fail? 200 all

After 100K? 200K?

I've put two in my '84 in the last three years. Bad rebuilds, or something else going on?

Bad airbox thermostat, perhaps?

Re: More on AMM's vs airbox thermostats. 200 all

The only failure I have had of an AMM has been due to a failed airbox thermostat. When I learned that the thermostat failure allows the pre-heated air into the AMM all the time rather than just in cold weather, I blocked the airbox flap shut with a piece of wood, or - time permitting - got a new thermostat.

Good Luck,

Bob

From Home Depot, or similar....

1.5" diameter rubber end cap w/clamp from the plumbing department, about $4.44

It is a firm fit over the inlet of the airbox where that hot har hose used to come in. Tighten the band clamp, and you're set.

I used a plastic tie strip to keep the flap inside the air box 'shut' to any air flow from the now defunct hot air hookup. I have a 740 Turbo and the hot air section is a complete waste of time, since the car has an intercooler.

Re: More on AMM's vs airbox thermostats. 200 all

I took out the assembly of paddles inside my air box and neatly duct taped it shut. I have a question though. The hot air metal hose was quite corroded and broken so I removed that, and now there is just a opening up at the exhaust manifold I guess it is. If I took it in to get a emissions test, would I fail? I should block that off but I'm not sure what would be the best way. I would rather not buy another $20 hose that would just be blocked off at the air box anyway.

I would duct tape it off there too but I'm sure that gets pretty hot.
