rear brake light 200 1990

Brickboarders!..I need your input!

I have a problem with my left rear brake light. When I depress the pedal it works..unless the headlights are on! I replaced the bulb and the lens is cracked and there was water inside. I dried it out but still have the same problem. This is only the left rearlight. ...Do I need to replace the entire assembly? Any suggestions?

Funny, I just hit an identical problem on my 740. Turned out there wasn't a good ground at the left tail lights. It's got something to do with brake light current seeking ground by back-feeding throughthe park light circuit. When the park lights are on, the back-feed path is voltage neutral. It's also a good time to make sure all the sockets are clean.

    Sedan or wagon?

Do you have rear fog lights?

Water does seem to be a problem on these critters at times. I have tried many times to waterproof a rear lens assembly to little avail. These days I drill a 1/8" hole in the underside edge of the capsule holding the water and it seems to do the job.

You will need to look for 'Ye Olde' corrosion around the bulbs, the metal on the bulb mount, and where the wiring goes to the taillight assembly. When you find it, clean it up! If it is real bad, you may need to replace it. Sedans (and maybe wagons?) you can order just the printed circuit part. If your lens is cracked real bad, it is time to check the bone yard.

That should get it working unless you have something strange going on.
