why do brakes squeal? ALL 89

I thought brake pads will squeal when there's dust inbetween them. Right?

How does anti squeal paste work when it's applied on the back of the brake pads?

I have one squealing 240, rear break pads are the cheapo napa ones. Did not have time to order PBR's. They sound like a bus.

To add emphasis to the truth Rob Kuhlman tells you about the ATE piston alignment, the factory manual is clear about this being the cause for rear brakes squealing. From personal experience -- it is. No shims, magic pads, grease or blue goo did as much as aligning the step in the piston with the rotation of the disk. Sounded like a school bus, now its quiet.

The rear ATE calipers do need the shims. Coat both sides with the hi-temp grease. Also, touch the edges with it, where they will rub top and bottom withing the caliper. Be sure to rush out all the brake dust from the caliper contact surfaces and press those pistons back into their bores to relube them with the brake fluid to stave off corrosion.

On the front Girling calipers, I don't use shims. I spray the *backs* of the pads with Permatex Disc Wuiet and have great results.

Normally I use grease on the shims, but this time I used high temp anti seize.

Anyway I think its better to get some new pads instead.

Thanks.

Haroon -- yes; I understand that it's to dampen high frequency vibration. I've also used anti-squeal shims which are thin metal plates with a gummed surface which adhere to the backs of the pads. Made by Raybestos and I got them at Pep Boys for approx. $14 a set (front or rear).

If your rears are really giving you trouble, you might want to make certain that the piston in the rear caliper is aligned properly. Bentley has a procedure on this. The contact edge of the piston has a recess which needs to be positioned in a proper orientation. I suspect the situation is similar to bicycle caliper pads which need to grab at the front before the rear or else it'll squeal.

the stuff that you put between the pad and the caliper prevents the pad from oscillating causing squealing. I dont know about dust, but I know that Volvo's original pads dont squeal. El cheapos has a tendency to do so, especially on rear (based on past experiences). Spend the extra buck, its worth it.
