Flame Trap 200 1990

I've got a '90 240 and a '98 940 SW. The flame traps have not been replaced for many miles, so I bought 2 kits from IPD (per IPD, both use the same kit). (the kits are just a new plastic flame trap, holder, and hose).

The question I've got is how the heck do you get to this beast to remove/replace? Both are between cylinders 3 and 4, and buried beneath the intake manifold.

Any tricks or tips for this? Do I have to remove the manifold (say it ain't so!)?

Thanks

Steve

Re: Flame Trap 200 1990

Just got through with replacing one on my 90 245. It is jus under the manifold. I losened the small side hose first then I had to work at the top hose a while. With one finger hold the trap holder down with the small side hose port. Then work the top hose off with another finger. then ben it out of the way. lift up on the holder to remove it from the lower return hose.

I'm curious as to why your flame traps are under the intake manifold on a '90 240 and a 940 (whatever year it is). Both of them should be between #3 and #4 intake runners, on top of the engine. Pull big vacuum hose up to reveal them, and the rest will take about 2 minutes.

Re: Flame Trap 200 1990

Hey Mike,

I was having leaking from the seal at bottom of oil sepatator,so I pulled the intake to get a better look and to clean up.Not too difficult a job but really need another reason to pull the intake.

Just clear away some tubing and reach your hand underneath and twist the flame trap off.Not nearly as tough as swapping a sensor or two w/o removing the intake.Just get in there and take your time, you'll get it.
