Loose Belts - Car studders?? 700 89ti

Hey guys,

My car(1989 760ti b230ft(k) studders when i accelerate hard but its not a turbo type of studder which will smokes. If i mash the gas hard from a stand still it studders until i let off and accelerate more gradually, however once up to speed the studder occurs rarely unless i give it a lot of gas. I looked my hoses over to be sure but they seem ok. Then i looked at my belts, i took the belts between my fingers and i was able to squezze them towards each othe r about 2 inches per side. Is this normal, could this be causing the studder, could this causemy car to run rough? Is there an easy way to check if my timing is ok?

Thanks guys,

Re: Loose Belts - Car studders?? 700 89ti

Gene: No, your belts should NOT deflect 2 inches, more like 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch; I am sure that other BrickBoarders will give you a more technical measurement system. Another 'rule of thumb' to try is: after adjusting your belt to the +/- 1/2-5/8-3/4 inch deflection, try to twist the belt 90 degrees with your index finger and thumb....pure 'seat of the pants', but probably pretty accurate. On the other hand, you do NOT want them too tight, either. Also, you might want to start all over again with new belts. And a first-hand word of caution here: I ordered a specific belt at a parts house, and later went to install it, only to see that the size marked on the belt did not match the size printed on its cardboard sleeve/holder, which is something that I should have checked before I left the parts house. Perhaps the clerk made an honest mistake, perhaps not; but as the buyer, the responsibility rested on ME, and I flunked that test...never again. It has been posted here by someone else that they liked the Gator Back brand; I do not know them, and would welcome the pro-and-con chat which we welcome on B-Board. I now buy mine at the dealer, or my indie does for me. Any extra cost is worth, to me, the knowledge that the right belt is coming from the right people...but I STILL check the sleeve AND the belt numbers, to be sure. I hope that this helps. Try the belt thing, check your driving again, perhaps that's all that you need. If not, at least it will be one less thing to worry about. (BTW, look at your pulleys, to see if they are 'running true' [=not out of whack], or cracked, or glazed, etc.). Good Luck.--PD (A last hint: after sending a message, read the instructions carefully so that you don't wind up posting the same message twice..we all may have done it, I have, but it just takes up room for more q-and-a from others. Drive safely, enjoy yer VoVo.)

Re: Loose Belts - Car studders?? 700 89ti

Hey,

ok tomorow i'm going to pop off the timing belt cover however the glazing statement sounds like something that might be true b/c today i gave it gass and i sounded like the engine spun up but i didnt go any faster and the tach stayed the same. And just to make sure is there ANY way that i can check timing by myself (i'm a weekend mechanic things like hoses, seals, brakes, rotors and electrical is the farthest i've ventured so far). THanks for all your help,

BTW i've been poing here for 5 years and that double post was an accident i thought i caught the back button in time to fix my error but i didnt, sorry.

Thanks again,
