Leak proofing sunroof 700 87

Hello bricksters,

It has been said with the "early production" models of the 740, the entire sunroof mechanism, including the base plate, must be removed from the car in order to change the sunroof headliner The given reason: it will leak if you dont. Apparently the sunroof mechanism is sealed in the base plate and will leak if not properly resealed.

The bottom line is , according to this info, if I want to change the sunroof headliner, or the mechanism ,then I must remove the headliner that

I recently struggled so hard to install.

Has any one had experience with this? What about just pulling out the mechanism and applying a bead of sealent to the mechanism before resinstallation?

Could someone describe "early production".

All Comments, opinions, significations, sworn testimonies, and hear say testimonies, accepted. I will sort it all myself.

Thanks

Re: Leak proofing sunroof 700 87

Since no one has specific info to give you I'll give you my opinions based on living with an '85 up to age 15 years and reading the manual as I had to replace the "gates".

First of all I don't consider a '87 to be early production.

The sunroof isn't really sealed, but does keep the water dripping through the joint to a rate which the "gutter" and the drain hoses can handle. Most water problems with the sunroof are because of plugged/damaged/disconnected drain hoses. They are routed through the "A" and "C" pillars.

I don't remember exactly how, but I remember taking the sunroof liner out without desturbing the rest of the sunroof when I replaced the broken gate. What I can remember involved some combination of releasing the clips at the rear, then moving the panel back to ?????

If you are interested, I'll check my 960 manual and see if it covers your design.

Re: Leak proofing sunroof 700 87

Jim,

On my 740 there is no way to get the sunroof lining out with out removing the sunroof mechanism. It slides out the back of the rail, after the mechanism is removed.

When the mechanism is removed, the seal between the base plate and the mechanism is broken. The purpose of the seal is to keep the channeled water from getting into the area between the two legs of the mechanism where there are no drains, just the base plate, and where it could seep through the headliner.

THanks for your response. Further comments are welcomed.
