What do you say?

I just recieved a free gearbox out of a 78 or 79 240. It's an M46 with bad bearings. Should I even try rebuilding it myself, just for fun? Where is a cheap source for bearings and maybe syncros? Would it be cheaper just to keep finding old gearboxes and using them 'till they die? I'm really in no rush with this, I have patience. Thanks in advance.

I like the idea of such a winter project.

I just found a good used M47 to replace mine with bad bearings. If anyone know a good source for such things, feel free to post it.

If I were in your position and had the time, I would definitely go for it. Afterall, a complete rebuild would mean a like-new transmission for once! I'm also prone to tinkering with similar projects for fun, but that's a different story. I've never rebuilt one, though, and I don't know how hard it is. I have only gone as far as to mess with the OD, which isn't that bad of a job. Putting in IPD's "mini rebuild" kit took me a couple of days last winter, working very slowly. (My first relatively big undertaking.) That's my two cents.

I think I'll do it unless someone really objects. I rebuilt an OD unit earlier this summer, it was my first rebuild of any kind, and was successful. I'm just worried if I need funky ($$) tools or guages.

Tools and guages are always the problem. I'm looking at doing a whole bunch of suspension bushings next summer and I'm really not sure how I'm going to do it yet. Oh well...I've got an entire academic year to worry about it. Maybe I'll learn something pertinent along the way.
