A/C Belt Adjustment 200 81

G'day all!

I need to change the belt for my A/C but I was trying to work out how to adjust the tension before I take it off. I last did it before I had PS so there was an adjustment mechinism but now the mount has changed and the only way I can see to do it is to pry it on. Is this correct?

Thanks

Re: A/C Belt Adjustment 200 81

Your A/C system uses a split pully system with adjuustment shims. Take the

4 bolts out 10mm wrench and the 2 nuts also 10 mm. from the center of the

A/C drive pully on the crankshaft. The belt will fall out at this point. install new belt rotating the crankshaft as you tighten. More shims in the middle , tighter belt , less shims in the center looser belt. Or just

pry it on with a screw driver and a remote starter (ign. off position)

Re: A/C Belt Adjustment 200 81

John, I believe you may have inadvertently turned the two shim procedures around. My manual says: to loosen the belt, add shims between the two pulley halves; to tighten the belt, remove shims. This is a really awkward way to adjust belt tension isn,t it?

I just replaced my AC belt recently and got the darn thing on by: leave the two pulley halves as loose as possible with only two pulley screws holding it together and these barely threaded in, place the AC belt on the two pulleys, put a socket wrench on the crankshaft and turn the shaft while alternating tightening the pulley screws on the side away from the belt. This walks the tight belt up onto the pulley with no damage. When the two pulley screws are tight, I replaced the remaining pulley screws. Also, it is very important to save any unneeded shims by bolting them on the outside of the pulley under the six pulley screws. Someday they will be needed when you put on a new belt.

My mistake , Less shims in thecenter tighter belt. more in center

looser. VW uses this method on the early Beatle.

Re: A/C Belt Adjustment 200 81

sounds like prying the correct size belt will be easier than playing whith the shims. At least the belt on there now isn't loose, it's just cracked, and the size is still visible.

Thanks!

Be careful when prying the belt over the edge of the pulley. I'm told the belt can be damaged this way.
