Fuel Pump Problem?? 700 1987

I am having what I believe to be fuel pump problems, but I am not sure so I am asking for input on other possibilities. When my gas tank is full, the car starts right up (1987 740 GLE), but when the tank is half or lower it has to be turned over stopped and turned over 2 or 3 times before it starts. Seems to me that it isn't getting gas. I figured it was the intank fuelpump, so I installed a new one and filter. BUT the problem still remains. Could it be the main fuel pump? If so is there a used one out there? I don't want to purchase a new one - I hear they are around $300.

Thanks for any input!

Did you check fuse 11 for the in tank fuel pump? They do fail. Fortuneately I check the one on the wife.gov's car before I got to changint the fuel pump.

Let the car idle and remove the gas filler cap. Have an assistant remove fuse 11 while you listen to the filler neck. If the sound does not change, the in tank pump is not working. If the pump is not working, you may want to start checking the elctrical connections since the pump is new.

The car will not run at all if the main fuel pump is not working.
