Thunk or Thump when shifting to Drive 700 '88

Hello, I'm new to this board but have owned 3 Volvos, '86 240 GL SW (stolen); '86 240 DL Sedan (still have) and my recent purchase '88 760 GLE B28, 158,161 miles. The 760 was bought at an auction dealership. It was clean, engine sounded great (took a mechanic with me) and the only visible problem was the driver window not working (turns out a previous owner must have broken the window, tried to replace it and couldn't put the regulator/motor back on). My Volvo mechanic also found broken motor mounts, driveshaft bushing needed replacing and a tune up. The horn just shorted today so I plan to get one from my local junk-yard from a 760 or 740. But I digress. I noticed on this recent one that everytime I put it in "drive" I hear this sometimes loud "thunk" or "thump". I sometimes hear it when excellerating and the automatic shifts. The mechanic thought that the above fixes would cure it but it didn't. I remembered that I heard the same sounds on the previous two but they still performed great. Any ideas what could be causing this and what posible solution. I have been reading the posts since finding this site and you all are a great help. I love my bricks and plan to be a memeber for a while. Thanks for any advice.

    Hi!

I have a '88 760, and it had the "thunk" when put in drive.

The reason for this was, in my case, the upper bushing holding the rear axle (or the center part of it) beeing worn out.

I changed this bushing, and the "thunk" went away. Shifting got a lot smoother too.

Could be u-joints. Do you notice any low-frequency vibration when braking to a stop, or when starting to accelerate from a stop?

I did notice some vibration that I thought was the rotors. My mechanic noticed that the output shaft had play in it and replaced the bushings? So should I have him check the u-joints now or was that it (sorry for the ?s, I don't know too much about all the workings of cars but am learning. I know enough to try not to let anyone take advantage of me as a woman)?
