Thunk or Thump when shifting to Drive 700 '88

Hello, I'm new to this board but have owned 3 Volvos, '86 240 GL SW (stolen); '86 240 DL Sedan (still have) and my recent purchase '88 760 GLE B28, 158,161 miles. The 760 was bought at an auction dealership. It was clean, engine sounded great (took a mechanic with me) and the only visible problem was the driver window not working (turns out a previous owner must have broken the window, tried to replace it and couldn't put the regulator/motor back on). My Volvo mechanic also found broken motor mounts, driveshaft bushing needed replacing and a tune up. The horn just shorted today so I plan to get one from my local junk-yard from a 760 or 740. But I digress. I noticed on this recent one that everytime I put it in "drive" I hear this sometimes loud "thunk" or "thump". I sometimes hear it when excellerating and the automatic shifts. The mechanic thought that the above fixes would cure it but it didn't. I remembered that I heard the same sounds on the previous two but they still performed great. Any ideas what could be causing this and what posible solution. I have been reading the posts since finding this site and you all are a great help. I love my bricks and plan to be a memeber for a while. Thanks for any advice.
