Know anything about turbodiesels? 700 1985

My '85 740 turbodiesel has AT with lockup torque convertor. Two questions: 1) Is there a way to delay lockup from the present 49-1/2 or so, to about 55 mph? It doen't have the little overdrive switch on the gear selector. 2) Can I do anything to increase the boost a little bit? I don't want for a rod to put someone's eye out, but I'm looking for a little more oomph when the torque convertor is locked up. It goes great except when trying to pull grades at highway speed, and dowinshifting at 50-55 mph makes me cringe; maybe I worry too much, but I hate to see anything much over 3,000 rpm. Thanks.

Re: Know anything about turbodiesels? 700 1985

Brad: you have the (in)famous ZF22L transmission, same as mine (mine is an '86 TD wagon)...but De Loreans, some Jags, etc., also used the same traany (I have read/heard), so we're in good company...I think. A post a few months ago was about putting in a higher stall speed torque converter (from a Japan pickup truck, if I remember correctly): the author of the post got back to me, said he hadn't done the swap, was thinking in terms of high-end torque (again, ALL of this is from a cobweb-attic memory). As far as 'oomph' goes, scroll back down to yesterday, Friday 5 october, at 1:13pm, a post with my name; it's part of a thread about boost. The response to me was that "with diesels, fuel = power." Follow that thread for some good input. Also, have you had an injector-timing check done? If you are even close to needing your timing belt done, ask your tech/shop what they do to ensure correct injector timing (a correctly-installed t-belt SHOULD take of it, I believe); the water pump should be replaced at that time; and you can ask them about doing a compression check, looking to see that the compression is at spec, with all cylinders within %? psi of each other (subject to my being corrected, of course). It was also suggested that a more open (3") exhaust MIGHT help.Good Luck, amigo.---PD.(BTW, someone will probably chime in with advice about getting a COMPLETE atf flush, and will probably suggest synth: that's your choice, but it sounds pretty good, based on reported results, etc.)
