How about sun roofs, how dependable are they? 900

I have learned a ton from this site and am just about ready to go buy myself a 940 Wagon. The thing is, I see most have a sun roof and I have heard of some pretty rough things happening with them. How good are the Volvos? I am concerned with leaks and corrosion starting around it.

Re: How about sun roofs, how dependable are they? 900

I have a 92 940 Turbo with a sunroof and have had exactly zero problems with it. This was a NJ corporate fleet car, transplanted to FL 5 years ago, apparently never garaged (faded red paint), so if it was going to have a problem, I would have expected to have seen it by now.

Re: How about sun roofs, how dependable are they? 900 94

once about a month after i purchased my car, the sunroof slipped off track

and i had to tape a bag over it..

took it to the dealer, $70

fixed in a day

not too bad (for a dealer)

my dad had the same problem on him '88 740T and he had a mechanic TRY to fix it for $400, and a week in the shop. still doesn't work to this day.

make sure your mechanic knows what he's doing if you ever do have a problem

Hmm , seems the DEALERs experienced technician was the best deal of the 2 choices. I guess thats why the dealer techs make the big bucks.

Re: How about sun roofs, how dependable are they? 900

Martinsr:

I purchased my 92 745t (essentially a 940 with 740 badges) third hand 20,000 miles ago (now has 127,000) and the sun roof has performed flawlessly to this day (it will probably break on the way home this evening now that I have boasted about how great it is). True, they can be a bear to fix. However, based on the relative number of posts relating to sunroofs on the Brickboard during the last year and a half I feel that sunroofs are not a "problem area" like fuel injection relays, radius arm bushings or 240 series blower motors.

There is a section in the 700\900 FAQ that relates to sunroof care and repair. Take care of it and like any other part of a Volvo, chances are good it will last much longer than some other brand of vehicle on the road.

Hope this helps and good luck

Re: How about sun roofs, how dependable are they? 900

I've had '93 940 Turbo wagon for about 1 year now.

The sunroof was never leaked a drop since I've owned it and works perfectly.

No corrosion seen at all in a sunroof area, or any other area for that matter.

There are relatively large drains at all 4 corners and a little "wall" that the sunroof seals aginst. Makes something like a moat around the inner opening. Good design. Works well.

I have heard abt the drains clogging up occasionally. That might cause problems.
