alternator? 200 1980

My 242 just died today. As I was driving, all the warning lights were flickering and would dim relative to the engine speed. This happened for a day. Next day I am at the gas station, and the engine will not turn over. I ended up jump starting it, but it would not accelerate with any other electric devices on (namely radio, whipers, defog, etc.). Does this mean the alternator is bad? It wasn't making any abnormal noises when I jump-started it. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Re: alternator? 200 1980

Max, there is a very good chance that your Brushes in your alternator wore down to the point that the Alternator is not working. If the bearings are still nice and quiet, for two bucks you can just buy the brushes, for about 40 bucks you can get the whole assembly that simply screws out and back in to the back of the alternator (from GAPA or PARTSBIN). Let me guess, you have 220000 miles on your car?

Yup, it's time to have the alternator rebuilt.

Re: alternator? 200 1980

when i had similar issues with my '84 240, i immediately assumed it was the alternator & replaced it.. which seemd to cure it for a while

then it would happen again .. . so i changed the voltage regulator .. which seemed to work for awhile as well

after going back & forth for some time, finally uncovered that it was a very badly corroded grounding wire from the alternator to the block .. when i would mess with things down there, i would jostle it just enough to make a good connection for awhile, then it would wiggle to a point where the connection was lousy

bottomline, before you spring for a new alternator, at least check & make 100% sure that the grounding wire is solid

hope it helps

Yes, very likely indeed.

Rich.
