Replacing fuel sender....Ideas??? 900 1995

Wife's 1995 945T has intermittent fuel gauge weirdness. Probably wouldn't bother ME too much, as I pretty much go by odometer. Of course, since it is wife.mil's ride, the first time she forgets to reset trip odometer, and runs out of gas, stranding her and 3 year old son, I will need to find a new place to sleep!

Anyway, went to dealer, and the only way they sell this is as an entire assy, including in-tank FP (95's had single pump in tank), to the tune of $370. Is it possible/advisable to pick up a used assy from boneyard, or Eire Vovo, and put my known good pump on this assy? First of all, I hate the LD, and can't stand to give them almost $400 to replace something that is at least partially working (FP, that is). Has anyone done this, and does it seem to make sense?

Re: Replacing fuel sender....Ideas??? 900 1995

Are you positive that its the sender? Early on, my 960 had a strange guage that the dealer never was able to solve. Had the guage replaced (helped a short time), the sender also replaced, this all under warranty. I found soon after, when replacing the light for the outside temp. that the plug on back side of the dash wasn't very tight, took needle nose pliers and gently closed up the metal ends in the plug. It has worked now for 4 years. Its worth a try.

Re: Replacing fuel sender....Ideas??? 900 1995

If you end up taking the sender unit/pre-pump out it can be carefully prised apart and dismantled. How it works is pretty obvious once apart

assuming it`s the same as the one on a late model 700 like mine (plastic tube type, with no separate arm and float)if you can`t fix it you have`nt lost anything but a bit of time!

if you think you have fixed it try it outside the tank before refitting you do`nt want to remove and refit it more often than you have to!

hope this helps, Colin.

On my 94 there is a light that illuminates when ever the ignition is on, regardless if the head lights are on. Makes it easier to read during the day.

Thanks, Dan. I'll give it a try this weekend and report back. It definitely makes sense to try your idea first.
