Straight headers, no mufflers! '71 142S 140-160 1971

Some of you may have seen my post about needing an entirely new exhaust

system for my 1971 Volvo 142S. Has anyone tried ditching mufflers and just running a pipe straight back from the headers?

Would it be too loud, or not work because of not enough backpressure, etc..

Asa

Al's comments are funny. Loud and pratical are not always the same. My 122 has 2 resonators. One is 20" and in front of the axle. Then the hump and a 12" one after the hump. Not very loud, actually, and pretty close to a straight pipe. When I drove it from my garage to the exhaust place, I had just the headers, so the exhaust was about 2 feet long from manifold to exit. This was deafening, and I imagine having nothing but a longer pipe would not quite things down much.

I have the stock header and the stock 1.75" exhaust which goes to where the first muffler should be and then stops. It is way too loud and only gets louder in a tunnel.

There isn't enough back pressure so low end torque is non-existant but topend is very good. Stick with at least one muffler.

Try getting a system from a 24x, they had 2" and the header is the only difference (the 24X system bolts straight on to the 14X header) so it's easy to find an used one without holes while going marginally larger.

Hello.

I wouldn't think you'd want to do that, I took the 02-sensor out the other day and drove around, and it was NOISY! (I tapped the manifold so I can measure the Air/fuel ratio.)

I'd say that a straight pipe on a Volvo four would sound great. Great because I LIKE to hear engines. If your neighbors all like to hear engines, and if all your local police officers are friendly motorheads, go for it.

Otherwise, use at least one muffler. One original-type muffler, I mean, because glasspacks (CherryBombs etc.)make inline engines sound louder rather than quieter.
