Re: Who's got What Plugs? 200 1984

1)If the vehicle is in half decent shape and has the ability to produce a reasonably strong spark.

2)If the vehicle is capable of being tuned and you have the skill to do so or can hire the skill.

(Using the right heat range plug is part of what I mean by "tuning")

Plugs are no issue, assuming we are talking street cars.

Regular Bosch. I tried the Plats but I felt no difference in performance or mileage so I keep the extra money in my pocket now.

There is no doubt in my mind that NGK plugs are the best. Don't let the low price fool you. They run great in the 223,000 mile 245Ti (BP7ES as I recall), the 855 (prone to cold fouling with other plugs but not with the NGK grooved platinums) and the Toyota pickem' up truck (whatever they hell regular NGK plats).

Champions foul in every IC engine known to man. Almost stranded deep with a 4 cylinder boat...new Champions, 1 cylinder at a time torture...first just missing so we decided to head for shore, then three cylinders, then 3 then 2 and we putted barely on one cylinder and just coasted to the dock. Got some NGK's. The boat ran like a raped ape with those.

I have numerous other stories about Japanese cars that don't even start on Champions.

Several days late, but I can't resist. NGKs in the cars, Champion in the B+S lawn and garden stuff. What road-going machines run on Champions? I know of one Harley that wouldn't run on NGKs. Put the old Champs back in and away it went. I once owned a Peugeot. The manual specified a Champion plug, but even the dealer couldn't get them. Maybe that is why the cars didn't sell that well here? Couldn't have been the styling...or the two year biodegradable plastic...nah.

Paul, I agree with your thoughts on Champions. I used to agree with the NGK's until the experiences I've had with them in both my boat and my motorcycle.

They do fail with no warning. It's happened to me on three seperate occasions. After my third failure, I sent them directly to NGK They anylized them and said "yep, they failed, they lost insulation".

I still think they are up there 'when they work' but if you have missing, don't rule them out.

Never had an NGK foul or miss, but I do change my plugs fairly regularly. (I'm just not the 100,000K miles spark plug change interval kinda guy) Just too cheap and easy on my 4 and 5 bangers....I'll be sure to post if one craps out on me.

I'm a once a year kind of guy myself, no matter what the mileage.

These plugs crapped out after about two weeks.

It was just a heads up because after just changing the plugs, the last thing I played with whike troubleshooting was 'the new plugs'.

The standard Bosch copper or NGKs are fine. The whole platinum, hi-po deal of other plugs is really just to extend plug life and increase replacement interval for people who don't want to be bothered with maintenance. I replace plugs every year - its no biggie for me.

I use NGK coppers in my 83' 242 Ti, and they seem to work very well. My dad uses the same in his 81' DL with good results. I have heard that platinums are good for some cars, but that for Turbo models the copper ones are just as good, if not better.

Re: Who's got What Plugs? 200 1984

NGK BPR6ES (I think).

I detest Champion plugs, having had bad ones right out of the box in both automotive and marine applications.

I stopped using them, except where I've been forced to (Champion 955 at $7 apiece for hi-perf marine engines).

Bosch Platinums are nice but I never found them to be any different performance-wise than the NGKs. In fact, I like the NGKs for idle better. Bosch was a touch on the rough side, for whatever reason. Tried them a bunch of times.

I just bought 16 NGKs for my own cars if that tells you anything.

Don't use Champion plugs if you can help it. I have had good luck with any other brand. I now have Nippn Denso in my Maxima, NGK in my 280Z, and Bosch Plat. in my Volvo.

I have had good experiences with:

-Autolite Double Platinum

-AC Rapidfire

-NGK Platinum

-Bosch Platinum Plus Four

-Bosch Super

The AC & NGKs are running in turbos.
