M46 a Getrag? ALL

Read an old article (review) of the 740T recently, and authors mentioned that it had "a 4 speed gearbox by Getrag and electronic overdrive." Sounds like an M46 to me, but I also figured that this was a Volvo box.

Then again, who knows, since 90% of the parts on our bricks are German.

Am I mistaken, or are they?

Re: M46 a Getrag? ALL

Thanks.

Did a little research on my own after posting and found that, yes, it is indeed a Volvo box. I also discovered that an "M51" by Getrag was available for a short time on some 260's in Europe.

Find it hard to believe that Volvo would manufacture their own gearboxes though. Sounds like it would be less expensive and less hassle to buy from a third party rather than reinvent the wheel. They did outsource the slushboxes, apparently. My understanding is that the early autobox 240's were equipped with a Borg-Warner 3spd and later cars with Aisin-Warner units, also used on some Toyo's. The rear end is a Dana-Splicer if memory serves.

Whoever made it, it's an excellent tranny...

Re: M46 a Getrag? ALL

Although rare, some US 260's in the late 70's had Getrag boxes. There are also some Getrag boxes from old 5-series BMW's that can be fit to a 240 if you can get the correct bell housing.

Re: M46 a Getrag? ALL

The author was wrong. M46 is Volvo, and even has VOLVO cast in the side of the transmission.
