Did a little research on my own after posting and found that, yes, it is indeed a Volvo box. I also discovered that an "M51" by Getrag was available for a short time on some 260's in Europe.

Find it hard to believe that Volvo would manufacture their own gearboxes though. Sounds like it would be less expensive and less hassle to buy from a third party rather than reinvent the wheel. They did outsource the slushboxes, apparently. My understanding is that the early autobox 240's were equipped with a Borg-Warner 3spd and later cars with Aisin-Warner units, also used on some Toyo's. The rear end is a Dana-Splicer if memory serves.

Whoever made it, it's an excellent tranny...
