Stuck spark plug 200 82

I bought this car at the police auction and cannot remove plug #2.

I have an awesome 1/2 inch impact and lots of air.

Should I?

Don't bother unless your sure your having a problem with this plug. I look at my plugs regularily and they're always fine. The days of fouled/melted plugs are long gone. If there is a problem with the plug firing (test by removing it's HT lead and see if the idle changes..WARNING HIGH VOLTAGE PRESENT YOU INSULATED GRIPS!!!) I would use the impact wrench, I've damaged more stuff with breaker bars etc than impact wrenches...basically cause metal is flexible and any extended pulling force stretches it to breaking point whereas an impct only streches it a bit thus avoiding metal failure. Good Luck,

Dee: try most if not all...at your discretion/whatever your comfort level is...of the previous posts; personally, I suggest modifying it a bit, to include the running of the engine, judicious use of PBBlaster, and then TIGHTENING the spark plug just the slightest tenny-weeny-itsty-bitsy bit: sometimes that actually breaks the 'bond' of rust, gunk whatever that's holding the offender in place. To modify pablos' suggestion (mramsoildude), a LONG breaker bar, with GENTLE thrusts, like almost pulsing a few degrees, and THEN trying to loosen the stuck thingy, just might work...I prefer the long, slow steady rhythmic approach, which might take a LOT longer to arrive at your hoped-for goal, with a slow hand and a LOT of attention paid to the object of attention, rather than just a quick gun-and-run, wham-bam-I'm-done-ma'am approach. It's harder and slower but that's okay, with a lot of time on your hands; even if takes an hour or two...or three, it'll be worth all the time and sweat that you put it into it, and you can do it standing up! :>) --PD.

i've used an impact wrench with success, but you have to turn the pressure way down then slowly increase it. tighten loosen works

uuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhh leave the impact wrench out of it for a bit....

heat the car up a bit.....then shut off....whilst it cools start spraying around the plug with PB Blaster....repeat....then when still medium warm...use a bigass breaker bar, and loosen and tighen and loosen and tighten and loosen and tighten, in and out and in and out, more lube, faster, oh God...faster.....oh sorry....repeat until it comes out dripping....seriously this should work.

If that doesn't work, take Don's advice and use the impact wrench....NOT

Try it with the engine good and hot. Aluminum (as in the head) expands twice as much as steel (as in the plug) when hot, so expansion might relieve some of the grip on the plug.

When you install new plugs, use never-seize on the threads.

If you use a big mutha breaker bar, do so carefully or you'll be looking for a machine shop to remove the broken plug. Likewise for an impact wrench.

Hi Dee,

i'd try using a big bar first of all to gradually apply more and more pressure. I'd be worried that the sudden 'shock' o impact tools could break the plug.

Regards,

Big Rich.

Well to break mine free.. I had the #2/3 both stuck I used the following approach.

Each plug turned out a few threads so I cranked them out until I got solid resistance and then blasted them with PBBlaster. I quickly cranked them back into the head and then repeated. In and out over and over while applying more PBBlaster. Eventually I got them both out. Cleaned up the threats and put in the new plugs.. WITH the anti-sieze compound this time.

Hope it works.

Jeff
