Stalling/wont start, engine code translation 200 89

Hi all, my 240 has been acting funny for the last few weeks and today I had to have it towed to a shop. When I first noticed trouble 2 weeks ago I was on the freeway and experienced total loss of power and the car died. I was able to restart it after many attempts and made it home. I have had intermittent problems with loss of power and power surges and a few stalls during the last 2 weeks.

Today after driving for a half-hour or so I had total loss of power and the car would not restart after dying. The engine would turn over but would promptly die even when giving full throttle. The codes were 2-2-1 @ 2-3-1. Does anyone have any idea, taking into account what I have explained the symptoms were, what might be wrong with the car? I just want to make sure the shop does not take me for more than what really needs fixing. If I was more mechanically adept I would do the work myself but alas I am pretty inept at those types of things.

Thanks in advance for any comments and/or advice.

Yes, you're right. It should run without it.

The aftermarket "generic" O2 sensors sometimes cause a Check Engine light. If you were seeing Check Engine before the sensor was replaced, try to look at things like the crank position sensor and fuel pump relay. Those are wild guesses, but not being able to eliminate the codes you're getting from the diagnostic unit, it's hard to speculate otherwise. If the problem coincided with the codes appearing in the diagnostic memory, it would be different.

Once the shop tells you what they find, post back here (if you have the luxury of time). If you're getting hosed, a bunch of people will tell you so!

Both have to do with the oxygen sensor signal. It probably died. Sometimes shops will call back with a laundry list o' stuff to do, but make sure that they mention that aspect.

Re: Stalling/wont start, engine code translation 200 89

Thanks for the reply Chris. I had the O2 sensor replaced a few months back. It was the "generic" one and not the OEM part, therefore they do not guarantee it. But as I recall, when I was getting the "check engine" light before I replaced the sensor, the car was driving allright but was probably running rich. And I also recall from the message board people telling me that the car will continue to drive even if the O2 sensor totally dies. Is this correct?

I juet replaced my blown O2 sensor after having drivin it around for about a month. So yes the car will run without but it runs a lot nicer with. Good luck with youre heap!
