What size tires?? 200 1984

What are the biggest tires I can safely fit on my 84 turbo sedan? I drive my car pretty hard so I want something that handle pretty well but give a fair ammount of treadlife. Thanx in advance for any help.

Ok, if I go with the stock tire size, I think I am going to go with the Kumho Ecsta HP4 716, mostly because they are $38 a peice on tirerack.com does any body have any experience with these tires?

I never heard of that brand. Why buy something you know nothing about. Tires are too important to skimp on. Check with you local library and check Consumers Report. I recently ran across an article on tires just this past couple of months. I thought it was the Oct issue but not sure. Anyhow this article had comparisons on several brands and from S rated to V rated. Prices varied all over the place and the higher price wasn't always the best tire in its category.

I assume since it is a Turbo, that you have 15" alloy rims?

If not (prior owner may have swapped) start there.

Remember that the greater sidewall height you go for, the greater will be the sidewall flex - providing a cushier ride, but the car will wallow and lean in the corners.

Tire shops usually provide height/width comparison charts.

Start with the factory size, and go up a width size - then reduce sidewall profile one size.

Most "sport" radials have softer tread compounds for better traction, but will provide lower overall tire life.

The "treadlife" warranty posted on many tires is a good indicator of tread "hardness."

Assuming you will be using the 240 Turbo wheels, 205 55-15 is very popular.

Sorry, I should have specified that I was using the 15 inch turbo rims. I want to get a tire that is a litle wider but keep the same basic tire height. Will the 205/55/15 do that?

205/55-15 fits well and has a diameter about 0.3" smaller than the OEM 195/60-15 your car originally came with - insignificant (1%) with respect to speedo error. Wider rubber will fit, but then you should be looking at wider wheels as well. FWIW I found some 740 15x6 alloys for my 245 and mounted Yokohama Avid T4 in 205/60-15 - very nice improvement over stock 185-14's. The T4's probably lack the absolute grip of an H-rated tire but have given me good service (205/70-14 on my last Volvo)and satisfy the boy racer in me when needed.
