Radiator pressure plugg?? 200 1982

While swapping the battery in my wife's 240 the other day I did a basic fluids check and noticed that there was a huge gaping hole in the radiator. It is/was some sort of pressure regulating plug I'm guessing. On the passenger side of the radiator, opening rearward.

There was still fluid in there, in-spite of her remembering "oh yeah, I did hear a hissing/steaming sound the other day when I parked..." So I'm hoping the engine isn't toast, but now I need to find out what to stick in this hole.

None of my hoses have gone awry and there's no flange on the hole. It's about the size of a wine cork (don't ask...), so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Laurence

Hi Laurence,
Same thing happened to my 745t recently. As was suggested to me, go to a hardware store that has a good selection of hardware and grab a well nut(tall rubber nut with a hole down the center and a brass threaded end...looks like a little Abe Lincoln hat ) grab one that will fit in the hole, along with a stainless steel bolt and washer and just tighten up until good and snug. Mine has been fine ever since.

Dan

p.s. using teflon tape on the bolt is a good idea

Laurence,

The hole is for a thermometer on some models. A rubber grommet & plug go there on other models. Nick at http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo.htm phone # 877 634-0063 can fix you up for not much $.

Good luck, I went through the same ordeal last summer.

Hi Laurence,

I know the hole you mean. On mine it is bunged with a flexible plastic/rubber 'cork' which is retained by a horseshoe shaped plastic clip. Should be able to get these from a dealer or the scrappy. Or with a new rad (big sponduliks).

good luck,

Big Rich.
