Water leak in tail light enclosure 200 1990

I have a 1990 240 DL.
Everytime it rains, water accumulates inside the driver-side tail light enclosure and that causes the tail light to burn out.
It is strange that the leak only happens in one tail light and not the other.
How did the water get in there ?
Is there any way to solve this problem ?

Thanks for any info.

My '88 244 would accumulate water on the right side also. I drilled the 1/8" hole in the bottom outside corner of both lights on the advise of the dealers service department. No more problem. But, one thing still plagues me. During a fairly heavy rain water must sit in the trunk channel on the left side and when I take off after being parked the cold rain water hits the tailight and blows that bulb. I leave the left side cover loose nowadays and always carry a spare it happens so frequently. But hey, things could be worse.

I have this problem on both by 240 and 740 sedans.

I asked my favorite Volvo mechanic the solution. He said there were three.

1. Try and seal the damn thing. (rarely works)
2. Buy a NEW one. (always works but is expensive)
3. drill a small (1/8") hole in the bottom of the lens so it drains outside and forget about it. (always works and is cheap)

I went with number three and have never had another problem with them.
