Q: What is the correct way to start the 240?

90, 240 DL

I noticed that in the morning when our 240 has sat overnight I cannot just get in and turn the key to start the engine. If I do, it will crank from four to ten times before it will start. Once the engine has been running for a while, and is then shut off, it will start right up immediately on the first crank.

BUT, I have found a way to eliminate the cranking after the engine was sitting still overnight. If I turn the key to the accessory position, wait a few seconds, and then turn the key the rest of the way on the start position, the engine will start immediately. Weather temps do not make a difference. Is this typical of the 240?

So, I was wondering if that waiting for a few seconds in the accessory position is the proper way to start the car? If not, then what is happening for those few seconds to make the difference? ... is the gas getting more combustible in those few seconds? And does that mean the cranking after sitting indicates a potential problem area?

My guess is that your fuel lines are being emptied through the night. When you turn the key to the on position, it turns on the fuel pump for a moment. This brings your fuel back up to the rail, to the injectors, and builds up enough pressure in the line. If you did it twice, you'd get even more of a head start on getting the fuel line back up to an optimal state.

A tiny leak will cause these conditions, allowing the the fuel line to depressurize over long periods of time.

I would suspect something is on the verge of death in your fuel delivery system...starting with the one way valve (holds fuel pressure after engine shut down).

But also check and resolder fuel pump relay, check in tank pump, fuel pump fuse and fuel pump electrical connections and ground. (Preventive maintenance)

I've figured that a few tunrns on the strater may bring up oil pressure, so it's never worried me. My Dad's b23e (ie Canada spec k-jet b23) has *always* been that way, as has my 73 142 d-jet.
On the other hand, Jarrod, do you have a part number or despcription for this valve? Are they found on k-jet cars or lh-jet cars, or both?
