Interesting find when replacing Timing belt 700 1987

Well got the Turbo replaced yesterday. While it was in the 50K timing belt was due. Well, had I waited another 1000K miles I may have had a real problem.
The harmonic damper was found to have cracked in half and the bolts were the only thing keeping it together. Had it gone, the main drive pully would have become a nice missle. Just a warning make sure when working on your car, do a good inspection of all components around the area you are working on. Don't ignore little problems they generally if left alone become even bigger more expensive problems Especially on High mileage cars. The new part was 173.00
what would have it cost had it gone at speed.

For certain. I'm not one who'd chance a timing belt to last a million miles. :)

No I replace it every 50K as the book says. Most of the cars you see broken down on the side of the road are from LACK of maintance.

Al,

Smilie = sarcasm. You wrote "had I waited 1000K" ...

Did it display any symptoms? Noises? Ive got a noise coming from the engine compartment on my 87-740 and I cannot figure where its coming from. I think its an engine noise, but I cant pin it down. The car runs fine. I hear this noise more after warm up.

I always wonder if its something I caused. The noise developed, not right after, but not long after, I changed my timing belt.

Thanks

No symptoms just a squealing Alt belt when I started it up. Belts were
about 35K miles old.
