Blows hot when set for cool......after thermostat replaced. Help Please. 200 1985

Replaced the non functioning thermostat today with a used stainless steel one from the wrecking yard. Also gave the engine a good flush before renewing the coolant. Temp guage now sits at parallel. However an unwanted side effect is the blower blows hot irrespective of setting. It does get hotter when set for heat.

This is a BIG downer in an Aussie summer!

Thoughts and advice will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Blows hot when set for cool......Problem Solved....I Think! 200 1985

Took the car to town this morning to have some colour code 915 mixed. (that's another story, 3rd time we've tried to mix this white for a Swedish made 240, 3rd time no luck.)

The blower ran as it should ...cold setting produced cool air.

My thinking is I didn't allow enough time for the heat to dissapate from the heater core.

Sorry to waste your time Don and R2. Will tuck your info away for future reference.

Blows hot when set for cool......after thermostat replaced. Help Please. 200 1985

Thanks fellas,

I will follow your advice tomorrow... it's 25 past midnight Aussie time. Must hit the sack.

My thinking on the relationship to the thermostat replacement is that the engine was running super cool with a non functioning thermostat and therefore there was little heat transfer into the cabin. Temp guage was only 7'oclock now 9.

Once again many thanks!

That's not generally related to the thermostat (which controls engine temperature only).

Two common reasons for your problem are a misadjusted heater control cable and a failing heater control valve.

I'd first readjust the cable to be certain that the heater control valve is fully closed when the control is set to full cold.

Puzzling to be sure. The thermostat does nothing except trap water in the engine block while it warming to operating temperature and then opens to allow to allow water to circulate to remove engine heat. A separate valve, opened and closed by sliding our heater control back and forth in the car, allows circulated engine coolant into the heater core (from where the hot air comes from). So, somehow your heater core valve is remaining open, but I don't believe it has anything to do with your thermostat renewal. I would try to find where the control valve is to the heater core. It has to be somewhere at the other end of the cable from the slider temperature controller in the car. Try to follow the cable and watch what moves sliding it from cool to hot.
