shift selector parts Diagram 700

Can you tell me a link or site to view a shift selector parts diagram. The shift selector button and shaft now comes out of the selector. It appears to have an e clip that fell off allowing the gear selector to move without pushing the button on top. Not good if driving down the road and lever gets bumped into reverse. I guess the question is what kind of clip holds the shaft down into the shifting device. This is a 1989 740 Volvo sedan GLE .Thanks PBreyer@att.net

the 740 shift selector button can come out of the gear selector knob.
THe button has a spring underneath-on a long shaft. The bottom end ofthe
shaft has a 'retainer' inserted to hold a cross bar in place.
the 'retainer' is a small spring steel tube-like piece. You have to work on the
gear shift while it is in the car. The 'retainer' breaks over time and then
the button will no longer allow you to lock into any one gear-and YES it
is necessary for SAFETY reasons.
I will have to dig into my files forthe proper names/parts #s etc.
But it is a DIY job. take care Mike LITTLE mlittle@atcon.com

Mike, thanks a million for replying to my message. Does DIY mean "do it yourself"?? The Volvo dealer wanted $700 to do the job. It would sure be great if you could find the part # for that retaining clip. The dealer wanted to sell me the whole thing for $300 plus $400 LABOR. Ouch. I don't have that kind of money. Is there a site to look at the parts???? Maybe I could get the used part from Erie Volvo in NY. Or could you recommend another scrap yard? Thanks again. PBreyer@att.net
