Rear window washer pump 900

My 940 wagon rear window washer no longer works. I believe its the pump (it just clicks when turned on). The pump is in a pretty tight spot (mounted on the washer fluid reservior, under the air filter, between the reservior and the fender, its a tight spot). Any advice on how to get it out (does just the pump come out, and if so, how to I remove it, or do I have to take out the entire reservior to get to it, and if so, how does that come out)?

Thanks

Not sure what your system looks like exactly, I have a 94 960. I'd bet the pumps are the same. Yes the motor does come out. The motor has a tube that enters the tank, the tube is held by a rubber grommet. Just pull up while twisting back and forth. Hope this helps.

and "be prepared for spillage" unless the tank was just about empty. It's just washer fluid, though.

The can be sand and junk down there. Try to clean the seating grommet without knocking junk into the tank, or you might end up needing another pump soon.

The manual suggests that junk may be jambing the pump gears. If so, it may clear by running the pump backwards by reversing the polarity of the 12 volts applied to the pump's motor.

That wasn't the case with my '96 960 last summer though. The motor shaft had rusted and the swelling caused by the rust had jambed the gear. Only solution was a new pump.

I had to take the air cleaner assembly out in order to pull the pump. (Once I had determined which pump was for the rear). I then ran for a day or so with a plug in the hole while a new pump came in. I was able to put the pump back with out removing the air cleaner again. (Pushing is easier than pulling.)

thanks for all the great advice, and this weekend I'll try reversing the input to the pump, and if that doesn't clear it up, at least now I know how to take it out.

            Thanks again guys.

Yeah, great information. I undoudtedl will have to replace a pump in the future. I remember being absolutely astounded to learn that both pumps were under the bonnet, and they were fed by a single (small) resevoir. This was my deduction after looking in every rear compartment I could find in the wagon...I had owned a 80 245 where you could fill the rear tank about once year or so.
